Congress Leader Bharat Chandra Narah Resigns Amid Ticket Denial Controversy
Guwahati, 25th March: In another blow to the Assam Congress, Bharat Chandra Narah has tendered his resignation from the party’s primary membership. This move follows Narah’s earlier resignation as the chairman of the party’s media cell, underscoring growing internal discord within the party.
In a concise resignation letter addressed to National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Narah announced his immediate departure from the Indian National Congress. His decision comes in response to the party’s refusal to field his wife, Ranee Narah, as a candidate for the Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency.
Ranee, a former Member of Parliament and Union Minister of State during the UPA 2 government, lost the nomination race to Uday Shankar Hazarika, a recent defector from the BJP to the Congress. Expressing disappointment, Narah initially submitted his resignation to Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Bhupen Kumar Borah before traveling to Delhi to meet with party leadership.
Despite the setback, Narah reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to the party’s interests. The resignation deepens the Congress’s existing woes, particularly amid defections to the BJP, further complicating its electoral prospects.
Supporters of Ranee Narah fervently advocated for her candidacy, citing her history of electoral triumphs and parliamentary experience. Ranee, a former two-time Lok Sabha MP and one-time Rajya Sabha member, last secured the Lakhimpur seat in 2009, subsequently serving in the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022.
