Assam Congress President Challenges CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Amid Defection Speculations

Guwahati, 26th March: Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah, addressing a press conference, accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of employing diversionary tactics by repeatedly suggesting Borah’s potential defection to the BJP.

Borah criticized Sarma’s alleged attempts to sidestep pressing issues by engaging in what he termed as ‘mind games’ and ‘psychological tactics’ to avoid scrutiny from the opposition.

Asserting his stance against joining the BJP, Borah demanded justification from media channels in Assam for posing such questions, challenging Sarma’s narrative.

Borah highlighted concerns such as the proliferation of toll gates in the state, accusing Sarma of deflecting criticism by insinuating potential defections to the BJP.

Expressing his intent to contest against Sarma in the 2026 elections, pending approval from his party, Borah emphasized the importance of opposition voices in addressing issues like landlessness among indigenous communities.

In a bold declaration, Borah announced his candidacy against Sarma, underscoring the need for a robust opposition to advocate for the people’s interests.

The speculations surrounding Bhupen Borah’s purported defection to the BJP were ignited by remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 24. Sarma’s assertions, claiming inside knowledge about Borah’s intentions, were met with skepticism by Borah, who refuted any plans of joining the BJP.
