Manipur: Severe Hailstorms Ravage Senapati District

Northeast Desk, 27th March: Senapati district in Manipur was struck by severe weather conditions on Tuesday, unleashing hailstorms that caused widespread destruction to villages, homes, and crops. Caught off guard by the calamitous onslaught, residents found themselves in distress as they grappled with the aftermath of the devastation.

The hailstorms targeted Mao and its surrounding areas, including Chingmei Khullen village and Laii village under Paomata sub-division, around 3:30 pm. Other areas affected included Sangkunglung, Chakha, and Willong Khunou under the Willong sub-division.

The impact of the adverse weather was extensive, with numerous houses reduced to rubble and vast areas of crops decimated by the relentless rain and hail. In the Mao area, heavy hailstorms caused significant damage to residential structures across most villages, particularly under the Song sub-division.

Even along the critical Imphal-Dimapur stretch of NH2 passing through Mao areas, the hailstorm’s fury was unyielding, exacerbating the plight of affected communities. Strong thunderstorms accompanying the hailstorm added to the destruction, leaving several residents without shelter.

The devastation of crops, crucial for villagers’ livelihoods and nearing harvest, compounds the economic woes of the affected communities. The scale of destruction underscores the urgent need for relief efforts to support those grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.

Furthermore, the neighboring Dima Hasao district in Assam also faced the brunt of the heavy hailstorm, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities in the region.
