AFSPA to remain in force in 4 upper Assam districts

Guwahati, 29th March: The Government of Assam, exercising powers conferred under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, has declared four districts – Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, and Sivasagar – as “Disturbed Area.” This declaration, made via notification No. HMA-19015/9/2019-Political(A)/74 dated 27/09/2023, with effect from 01/10/2023, was initially for a period of six months.

Assam Police Headquarters submitted a report indicating improved law and order situation in the state, except for the presence of one active militant organization in the aforementioned districts. As a result, they recommended the continuation of the “Disturbed Area” status under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, beyond 31st March 2024.

After careful consideration of the proposal, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, communicated to the Government of Assam via letter No. 11011/51/2015-NE.V dated 27/03/2024, advising to maintain the “status-quo” regarding “Disturbed Areas” in the State of Assam for a further period of six months starting from 01/04/2024.
