Manipur National People’s Party MLAs likely to merge with state BJP: Reports

Northeast Desk, 29th March: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Manipur is witnessing significant political shifts, with reliable sources indicating potential mergers between National People’s Party (NPP) MLAs and the state BJP.

Reports suggest that Thongam Shanti Singh, the working president and MLA of NPP, was seen at the BJP Manipur office alongside other BJP MLAs, hinting at possible collaborations.

Earlier this month, the NPP, under the leadership of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, announced its support for various candidates across northeastern states. This included endorsing the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) nominee in Nagaland and the Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidate in Manipur.

Furthermore, the NPP expressed support for Kachui Timothy Zimik, the NPF candidate contesting for the Outer Manipur seat, replacing its sitting MP Lorho S. Pfoze.

It’s noteworthy that the NPP, NPF, and NDPP are allies of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Sangma emphasized the mutual support among NDA partners, with each backing candidates in different northeastern states.

In reciprocation, the BJP had previously declared its support for NPP candidates in Meghalaya’s parliamentary seats, the NPF nominee in the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat, and the NDPP contender in Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat.

These developments underscore the intricate alliances shaping up in Manipur’s political landscape as parties align to maximize their electoral prospects in the upcoming elections.
