Storm Ravages Mizoram After Easter Celebrations

Northeast Desk, 31st March: Following the conclusion of Easter festivities, Mizoram was struck by a powerful storm, causing widespread destruction across several districts and inflicting significant damage to homes and livestock along the Mizoram-Tripura border.

The storm, which descended shortly after the conclusion of the Easter Sunrise service on Sunday, left a path of devastation in its wake. Initial reports indicate that numerous houses were razed to the ground in various districts of Mizoram, resulting in substantial losses for residents. Additionally, several areas in Aizawl city experienced power outages following the storm.

Between 9-10 AM on Sunday morning, the sudden and severe nature of the storm caught many residents off guard, with witnesses describing scenes of chaos and destruction. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and coordinating relief efforts to assist those affected by the calamity.

In Serchhip district, several houses suffered severe damage, with roofs torn off by the powerful winds. In some villages, electricity poles were uprooted, exacerbating the impact of the storm.

A significant incident occurred in East Lungdar village of the district, which was slated to host the Statewise Church Men’s Conference from April 12 to 14. The intense winds and heavy rains that battered East Lungdar village demolished the conference pandal constructed by the Mizoram Synod Pandal Structure. Reconstruction efforts for the pandal are set to commence on Monday.
