Electoral Authorities in Meghalaya Make Significant Seizures Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

Northeast Desk, 5th April: In the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya has reported substantial seizures across the state in alignment with the Model Code of Conduct.

Between March 16th and April 4th, 2024, authorities have confiscated various items, including cash, liquor, drugs, freebies, and other materials. These actions form part of the ongoing efforts by electoral authorities to curb malpractices and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

The seizures during this period include cash amounting to Rs 31.87128 lakhs, 27,348.37 liters of liquor valued at Rs 42.56995 lakhs, 123,936.91 grams of drugs worth Rs 139.08918 lakhs, 1,345 freebies priced at Rs 0.6568 lakhs, and other items totaling Rs 292.90801 lakhs.

This substantial haul highlights the dedication of authorities to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process and ensure fairness for all candidates. With the Lok Sabha elections drawing closer, such proactive measures aim to deter any attempts at influencing voters through illicit means.

The Chief Electoral Officer has stressed the importance of vigilance and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to electoral malpractices. With the continued collaboration between authorities and citizens, Meghalaya is poised for a free, fair, and democratic election process.
