Landslide Blocks Critical Road in North Sikkim, Adding to Post-GLOF Challenges
Northeast DEsk, 6th April: A critical road linking Chungthang to Mangan, traversing through Toong Naga, has been rendered impassable near Theng Tunnel due to a landslide, compounding the challenges faced by North Sikkim in the aftermath of a devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) last year.
The unfortunate landslide occurrence has disrupted vital transportation routes in the region, causing inconvenience to both residents and travelers. The road, which had previously undergone closure following the GLOF incident, had only recently been restored through concerted efforts.
However, the recurrence of a landslide yesterday has once again halted traffic flow, highlighting the fragile conditions prevailing in North Sikkim post-disaster. The renewed blockage underscores the arduous task faced by local authorities in maintaining connectivity amidst challenging terrain and unpredictable natural occurrences.
Efforts to clear the landslide and restore passage along the Chungthang to Mangan road are currently underway, albeit amid anticipated logistical hurdles. Authorities are prioritizing the reopening of the route to facilitate the movement of essential goods and services and to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the affected regions.
As North Sikkim continues its recovery journey from the aftermath of the GLOF, the occurrence of additional challenges such as landslides underscores the need for sustained efforts and proactive measures to mitigate risks and enhance resilience in the face of natural disasters.
