Police Operation in Assam Nets Illegal Firearms Ahead of Elections

Guwahati, 7th April: Amidst the escalating election fervor in Assam, a targeted police operation in Khatkhati resulted in the apprehension of two individuals on Sunday, April 7, for illegal possession of firearms.

Acting on confidential police intelligence, authorities intercepted an Alto car bearing registration number AS-26F-5554 near Balijan, adjacent to the Khatkhati Police Station in the Karbi Anglong district.

During the operation, law enforcement officials seized two illegal firearms, including a 0.32 and a 0.22 caliber pistol, along with 13 rounds of 7.62 ammunition from the vehicle. The successful execution of the operation was attributed to the police’s coordinated efforts based on informant information.

The arrested individuals, identified as Sibiston Islary and Manajil Narzary, hail from the Chirang district in Assam. The discovery of illegal firearms in their possession has raised concerns about potential violence in the region during the upcoming elections.

Currently, investigations are underway as police authorities seek to unravel more details surrounding the illegal acquisition and possession of firearms by the apprehended individuals.
