Assam-Meghalaya Border Dispute: 80% Resolved, Remaining Issues to be Addressed Amicably, says BJP Leader
Northeast Desk, 9th April: Amidst the longstanding Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, Meghalaya’s cabinet minister and BJP leader, Al Hek, has announced significant progress, stating that 80% of the ongoing conflict has been resolved.
Hek emphasized that the remaining 20% of the dispute will be tackled through amicable solutions, marking a positive step towards comprehensive resolution.
The dispute, spanning five decades, revolves around 12 points along the 885 km border between the two states, including areas like Upper Tarabari, Gazang reserve forest, Hahim, and Langpih, among others.
Significantly, an agreement has been inked to address six of the twelve disputed sectors, signifying tangible progress in resolving the contentious issue. Since Meghalaya’s formation from Assam in 1972, the border dispute has persisted, resulting in numerous clashes and fatalities.
Clashes as recent as November 2022 claimed six lives, underscoring the urgency of resolving the conflict. However, recent efforts signal a shift towards peaceful resolution, with confrontations on September 26, 2023, resulting in no reported injuries, offering hope for lasting peace along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
