Supreme Court Rejects Plea for Voting Facilities for Displaced Manipur Residents Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections
Northeast Desk, 15th April: The Supreme Court declined to entertain a plea requesting special voting facilities for approximately 18,000 internally displaced persons in Manipur ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, cited the impracticality of intervening at such a late stage, warning of potential disruptions to the electoral process.
The petition, filed by Manipur resident Naulak Khamsuanthang and others, urged the Election Commission of India to facilitate voting for displaced individuals residing outside Manipur.
The plea highlighted the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur since May 2023, which has led to over 160 fatalities and numerous injuries.
Despite a decrease in violence, many residents remain displaced, living in relief camps away from their homes.
