Mizoram: BSF Personnel in Custody After Vehicle Accident Claims Life of 12-Year-Old Boy in Aizawl
Northeast Desk, 22nd April: A tragic incident unfolded in Aizawl on Sunday evening when a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel’s car struck and killed a 12-year-old boy, Lalawmpuia, in the Durtlang North locality. The collision, which occurred around 5 pm, resulted in the immediate registration of case number 132/24, dated April 21, 2024, under IPC Sections 304(A) and 279 at the Bawngkawn Police Station.
Lalawmpuia, a 6th standard student of Govt. Durtlang Middle School-II, was riding his bicycle when the Scorpio car, driven by the BSF personnel, collided with him. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Lalawmpuia succumbed to his injuries.
The aftermath of the accident was captured by CCTV footage, revealing two individuals dressed in BSF uniforms exiting the vehicle before swiftly returning and fleeing the scene. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, the individuals made their escape.
The incident sparked outrage among the local community, leading to a gathering at the gates of the Border Security Force camp in Durtlang and later at the Aizawl Police Station. Concerns were raised regarding the identity of the BSF personnel in custody, with the crowd disputing his involvement based on the CCTV footage.
The situation eventually de-escalated after police provided proof of the detained personnel’s identity, assuaging the concerns of the gathered crowd. However, the tragic loss of Lalawmpuia has left the community mourning and calling for justice.
