Assam: AIUDF Polling Agent Dies at Polling Booth in Hailakandi

Guwahati, 26th April: In a tragic incident that occurred in a polling booth in Assam’s Hailakandi as an AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) polling agent died on April 26.

The deceased AIUDF polling agent has been identified as Farooq Ahmad.

The incident unfolded at the Gollashera Primary School polling centre situated on the Assam-Mizoram border.

Ahmad collapsed while carrying out his duties and was pronounced dead immediately. Local sources suspect the cause of death to be a brain stroke.

As of 9 am today, Assam reported a voter turnout of 9.71% in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Diphu recorded the highest turnout with 14.13% polling completed, while Silchar saw the lowest at 5.49%.

A total of 9,133 polling stations have been set up across the five constituencies of Assam for this phase. Anurag Goel, Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, confirmed during a press conference in Guwahati that all arrangements for the second phase of elections are in place.

He mentioned that 77,09,276 voters are expected to cast their votes today across the 9,133 polling stations. In this phase, 61 candidates are contesting for the five constituencies, with the highest number of candidates (24) from Karimganj and the lowest (5) from Diphu. Voting commenced at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm.
