Second Phase of Lok Sabha Elections Unfolds Across Northeast India
Guwahati, 26th April: As the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections kicks off on April 26, all eyes turn to the northeastern states of Assam, Manipur (Outer), and Tripura (East), where candidates are competing for victory in their respective constituencies.
The constituencies slated for the second phase of voting include Kaziranga, Darrang-Udalguri, Silchar, Karimganj, and Diphu, representing a diverse cross-section of Assam’s population spread across the Brahmaputra and Barak Valley.
In the newly formed Kaziranga constituency, the political arena heats up with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Kamakhya Prasad Tasa facing off against Indian National Congress’ (INC) Roselina Tirkey.
Another freshly delineated electoral division, the Udalguri-Darrang Lok Sabha constituency, witnesses competition among BJP’s Dilip Saikia, INC’s Madhab Rajbanshi, and BPF’s Durga Das Boro. BPF supremo Hagrama Mohillary’s announcement of AIUDF’s support for BPF adds complexity to the electoral dynamics in Udalguri-Darrang.
In Silchar Lok Sabha constituency, covering Cachar district, prominent candidates like Parimal Suklabaidya from BJP and Surjya Kanta Sarkar from Congress vie for victory.
The Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency braces for a three-cornered electoral battle between BJP, Congress, and AIUDF, with candidates Kripanath Mallah, Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury, and Sabul Islam Chowdhury respectively.
Meanwhile, in the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency, Joyram Engleng from Congress and Amar Singh Tisu from BJP lead the charge, advocating for their visions of development and community empowerment.
Across the other two northeastern states, Outer Manipur and East Tripura, electoral polling has also commenced.
In Outer Manipur, amidst challenges and violence, candidates vie for victory in a democratic battle featuring Congress and NPF, a coalition partner of the BJP government in Manipur.
In Tripura East, reserved for Scheduled Tribes, BJP’s Maharani Kriti Singh Debbarma faces off against former CPI(M) MLA Rajendra Reang, highlighting the tribal and political dynamics of the region.
As these key candidates battle it out, the electoral landscape in Northeast India remains dynamic, reflecting diverse interests and aspirations in the democratic process.
