Assam: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Addresses Public Meeting in Barpeta

Guwahati, 27th April: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on April 27 at a public meeting in Assam’s Barpeta emphasized the pivotal role of his party, particularly lauding the legacies of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi in transforming India’s agricultural and industrial sectors.

Kharge challenged the BJP’s narrative on India’s agricultural self-sufficiency, asserting, “In a country where rice and wheat weren’t sufficiently produced, and we had to import from America, today we are producing enough wheat, rice, and pulses for our people. This is all because of Congress, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi who introduced the Green Revolution and White Revolution.”

Kharge highlighted the transformative legacies of Nehru and Gandhi, attributing to them the significant advancements in India’s agricultural and industrial domains. “In a country where not even a needle was manufactured, if someone dared to launch rockets, it was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi,” Kharge stated.

Earlier, Kharge’s open letter to Prime Minister Modi regarding the Congress manifesto sparked controversy, adding to the intense political landscape surrounding the upcoming elections.

In a press conference in Guwahati as part of his campaign trail in Assam, Kharge defended his decision to engage directly with Modi. He clarified, “I have spoken to PM Modi and not Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma because I am a leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha…So who is my opponent in parliament?.. Rajya Sabha…It’s Modi..so I will speak to Modi.”

Sarma responded to Kharge’s statement, extending an invitation for Kharge to join the BJP. He stated, “If Kharge wants to join the BJP, then he should and he can come.”

Sarma issued a direct invitation, expressing his willingness to welcome Kharge into the BJP fold.

The exchange between Kharge and Sarma adds a layer of intrigue to the political discourse in Assam amidst the ongoing election fervor.
