Meghalaya: Defence State Office to Submit Detailed Survey Report on Lum Survey Land in Shillong

Northeast Desk, 1st May: Amid allegations of illegal settlers and illicit activities on a plot of land at Lum Survey in Shillong, the Defence State Office in Guwahati has pledged to provide a comprehensive survey report, following discussions held during a meeting convened by Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu of East Khasi Hills District on May 1.

According to Sadhu, representatives from the defence state office attended the meeting and briefed the attendees on the historical background and actions taken regarding the disputed land. They assured cooperation in sharing detailed information to assist in determining the appropriate course of action.

Regarding the ongoing legal proceedings, Sadhu revealed that the land was initially awarded to the defence state office in a title suit. However, subsequent legal challenges led to a court-issued stay order, delaying any eviction efforts until a decision is reached. The next hearing is scheduled for May 27.

Despite the legal complexities, Sadhu affirmed the district administration’s commitment to addressing illegal activities at Lum Survey. Plans are underway to collaborate with the Superintendent of Police for a comprehensive law and order report in the area. Additionally, a joint committee comprising officials from various offices, including the defence state office and police, will conduct field inspections to verify allegations of illicit activities.

While acknowledging the court’s jurisdiction over eviction matters, Sadhu emphasized that measures to maintain law and order would proceed independently of the court’s directives. Allegations of drug peddling and smuggling have prompted requests for detailed reports from the police, with immediate action planned to curb such activities.

The district administration aims to conduct field inspections within the week to assess the situation firsthand and implement necessary measures to uphold law and order in the area.
