Completion of First Phase of Deportation of Illegal Immigrants from Myanmar in Manipur

Northeast Desk, 2nd May: The initial phase of deporting illegal immigrants from Myanmar has concluded in Manipur on May 2, with 38 individuals leaving India through Moreh. The deportation process was conducted without discrimination. Additionally, one Indian national was repatriated from Myanmar during the handover ceremony.

The State Government continues its efforts to identify illegal immigrants and record their biometric data, prioritizing the security of the nation’s borders and sovereignty.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued a stern warning on April 29, drawing attention to the alarming proliferation of 996 new villages attributed to illegal immigration. In a post on the microblogging site X, Singh emphasized the grave threat posed by this phenomenon to indigenous communities and national security.

Singh’s message addresses a long-standing issue plaguing Manipur and the nation, dating back to 2006. The surge in new village establishments across Manipur has been largely driven by an unchecked influx of illegal immigrants from neighbouring Myanmar. This influx has not only altered the demographic landscape but has also led to widespread deforestation, primarily to accommodate settlements and illegal activities such as poppy cultivation.

Moreover, the encroachment of these illegal immigrants on resources, job opportunities, land, and the rights of indigenous populations has heightened tensions within the region.
