Delhi Zoo Suspends Animal Exchange Program with Assam Amid Rising Temperatures
Guwahati, 3rd May: As Delhi swelters under scorching temperatures, the National Zoological Park (NZP) in the national capital has decided to temporarily suspend its long-standing animal exchange program with Assam. Zoo Director Sanjeet Kumar cited the soaring temperatures and unfavorable atmospheric conditions as unsuitable for transporting animals.
“The sudden increase in temperature has prompted us to put the animal exchange program on hold until more favorable weather conditions prevail,” Kumar stated. The exchange program was set to involve two female rhinoceroses, with one intended to be swapped for a male rhinoceros from Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden. Tigers and blackbucks were also part of the planned exchange.
Kumar emphasized that the exchange has been halted temporarily due to the current weather conditions in Delhi. Plans to bring the animals to the capital have been postponed until June, pending completion of all safety assessments.
April 2024 saw warmer temperatures compared to the previous year, with an average maximum temperature of 35.3 degrees Celsius. Despite this, the number of days when the temperature exceeded 40 degrees Celsius was notably lower compared to previous years.
The NZP initiated the exchange program with the Assam zoo due to the absence of a male rhinoceros at the Delhi Zoo for the past nine years. The exchange was proposed to fulfill the Assam zoo’s request for a female rhinoceros and a Bengal tigress.
Established in 1952, the National Zoological Park occupies a 176-acre area under the central government’s jurisdiction. However, amidst the current weather conditions, the exchange program remains on hold to prioritize the safety and well-being of the animals.
