Assam: Unauthorized Operation of Brick Kilns Raises Regulatory Concerns in Samaguri

Guwahati, 3rd May: A recent revelation has shed light on the alarming number of brick kilns operating without the necessary approvals in the revenue circle areas of Samaguri, situated within the Kaliabor sub-division. Out of the 47 brick kilns in the region, a staggering 41 have been found to be operating without obtaining the required No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the Kaliabor sub-divisional administration.

The lack of NOCs for these 41 brick kilns highlights a significant lapse in regulatory compliance within the brick kiln industry, as per a notification issued by the Kaliabor sub-divisional administration. This administrative action underscores the need for stringent enforcement of regulatory protocols in the brick manufacturing sector.

Efforts to address these unauthorized operations began with a series of notices issued by the Additional District Commissioner overseeing the Kaliabor sub-division. Starting from January 12, 2024, these notices urged brick kiln operators to regularize their status by obtaining NOCs from the concerned authorities.

Despite repeated warnings and opportunities for compliance, the situation escalated when a stern warning letter was issued on May 13, setting a deadline for the collection of NOCs by May 15, 2024. Failure to comply with this directive would result in the classification of these brick kilns as illegal entities, subject to severe consequences.

This crackdown reflects the authorities’ commitment to addressing regulatory violations within the brick kiln industry, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established guidelines. While a few brick kilns had obtained NOCs from the Kaliabor sub-divisional administration in December 2013, the current situation necessitates renewed efforts to ensure compliance across the board.

Amidst these developments, the proposal by the Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) to introduce Zig-Zag Technology in brick kilns by February 2025 signals a potential shift towards more environmentally sustainable practices in the brick manufacturing process. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote eco-friendly technologies and mitigate the environmental impact of industrial activities.
