Assam: Golaghat assault accused Babashyam dies in police firing; Community Demands Justice
Guwahati, 13th May: The death of Babashyam, also known as Baba, in Golaghat on May 13, following gunshot injuries sustained during a police intervention, has sparked a wave of outcry for justice within the local community.
Baba Shyam had been accused of attacking two individuals with sharp weapons in Kumarpatty, Golaghat, on April 30. Police officials, in an attempt to control the situation, resorted to using lethal force, resulting in Baba sustaining bullet injuries. After a 12-day struggle, he succumbed to his injuries at Jorhat Medical College on Sunday.
His family and members of the local community have raised concerns over the police’s use of lethal force, particularly highlighting Baba Shyam’s alleged mental health issues. The deceased’s cousin questioned the decision to shoot him in the face, suggesting that aiming for his leg could have been a more appropriate course of action. He called upon the relevant department of the Assam government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
The grieving mother of the deceased, mourning the loss of her only son, has appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene in the matter. The community demands transparency and accountability in the handling of Baba Shyam’s case, seeking justice for the tragic loss and closure for the bereaved family.
