Manipur: Committee Urges Continued Security Deployment Amidst Concerns Over Peace Restoration
Northeast Desk, 13th May: The United Committee of Pukhao and Makeng Dolaithabi Gram Panchayat has underscored the imperative of maintaining security in vulnerable regions until normalcy is fully restored, urging authorities not to withdraw the BSF battalion from Purum village.
Expressing their resolve, the committee cautioned of potential agitation if their plea goes unheeded. President Thokchom Sanjoy Singh, addressing the media in a press conference today, highlighted the series of attacks by armed miscreants in peripheral villages of Imphal East district since the onset of the crisis on May 3.
Singh commended the effectiveness of the BSF-37E COY deployment in Purum village, significantly mitigating the situation. However, he lamented the government’s decision to withdraw them prematurely, emphasizing its untimely nature in the peace restoration process.
Reflecting on the past ethnic violence in 2023, Singh recounted the designation of Pukhao, Leitanpokpi, and Dolaithabi as ‘RED ZONE’ areas due to relentless attacks. He warned of potential security risks and a resurgence of violence if the BSF-37E COY is removed from Purum village.
Urging protection against armed miscreants, Singh appealed for the extension of BSF-37E COY deployment in Purum Village until peace is fully reinstated. In the event of withdrawal, the committee vowed to initiate an indefinite total shutdown on the Imphal-Pukhao road.
The United Committee, representing 13 villages in the periphery of Imphal East district, remains steadfast in advocating for the safety and welfare of its constituents.
