Assam Agricultural University Launches Major Tree Planting Initiative for Environmental Sustainability and Farmer Empowerment
Guwahati, 14th May: In a groundbreaking effort to promote environmental sustainability and economic empowerment for farmers, Assam Agricultural University (AAU) in Jorhat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) of New Delhi and ReNew Power Synergy Private Limited to plant one crore saplings across Assam.
The initiative aims to leverage carbon testing to provide financial benefits to the state’s farmers. The MoU includes assessing carbon deposits in trees maturing three years post-planting, with farmers from various regions of Assam participating in the plantation drive.
Dr. Bidyut Chandan Deka, Vice Chancellor of AAU, emphasized the collaborative effort involving Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Krishi Research Centre under the university’s umbrella. The initial phase will focus on planting saplings in ten districts: Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Nalbari, and Barpeta.
TERI officials highlighted the dual benefits of this initiative, noting that participating farmers will gain financially while contributing to environmental conservation. Each tree owner stands to benefit from the carbon credit mechanism, providing a sustainable income source alongside environmental preservation.
The signing ceremony featured notable participants including Dr. Sanjay Kumar Chetia, Director of Agricultural Research, Dr. Prasanna Kumar Pathak, Director of Agricultural Sciences, Dr. Manoranjan Neog, Director of Extension Education, and Dr. Ranjit Kumar Saud and Dr. Mrinal Saikia, Associate Directors of Agricultural Research from AAU. From TERI, Dr. J.V. Sharma, Senior Director, along with other esteemed professors, contributed their expertise to this collaborative effort.
This ambitious project marks a significant step towards integrating environmental initiatives with economic incentives for farmers, fostering a sustainable future for Assam.
