Acclaimed Assamese Director Roopak Gogoi Announces Pan-India Release of Action Thriller ‘Rudra’
Guwahati, 14th May: Acclaimed Assamese filmmaker Roopak Gogoi has revealed details about his upcoming multi-crore action thriller ‘Rudra’, which is set for a pan-India release by the end of this year. The film will feature Assamese superstar Ravi Sarma in the lead role, along with a cast of around 60 senior and junior actors from both film and theatre backgrounds.
Gogoi, renowned for his award-winning children’s film ‘Tumi Malala’ (You are my Malala), shared that ‘Rudra’ will blend intense action with an emotional storyline reflecting various situations in rural society. The script, penned by Gogoi himself, promises to deliver a gripping narrative that goes beyond mere thrills.
Shooting for ‘Rudra’ will commence next week and is scheduled to take place across Assam, Meghalaya, and Andhra Pradesh, with completion expected by July. To ensure top-notch action sequences, the production unit has brought in specialists from outside the state to train around 30 local youths. This initiative aims to boost the quality of action in Assamese cinema and reduce reliance on stuntmen from Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai, thereby lowering production costs.
“We are aiming for a release by November end,” Gogoi stated, highlighting the team’s dedication to delivering high-quality entertainment. He noted that while the initial budget has been exceeded to meet the film’s ambitious vision, the investment will be adjusted as needed to achieve the desired outcome.
‘Rudra’ is being produced by Rajesh Kumar More, O P Garodia, Arvind Garodia, Gautam Beria, Anup Beria, and Manoj Kumar Kedia, with More describing it as a big-budget film.
Gogoi addressed potential challenges, referencing an incident where an Assamese superstar’s big-budget film failed at the box office due to political controversies. He emphasized that a film’s success depends on its intrinsic value and audience appeal, regardless of external attempts to undermine it.
He also criticized a militant group’s ultimatum to hall owners to run a particular Assamese film for three weeks, arguing that such forced screenings are counterproductive if there is no audience demand.
Reflecting on his previous work, ‘Tumi Malala’, Gogoi discussed the film’s portrayal of a friendship set against the backdrop of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) controversy. Despite facing hurdles in Indian film festivals due to its sensitive theme, the film received international acclaim, including the Golden Flowers Award at the Beijing International Children’s Film Festival 2022.
With ‘Rudra’, Gogoi aims to push the boundaries of Assamese cinema, combining high-stakes action with heartfelt storytelling to captivate audiences across India.
