Meghalaya: Khyndailad to Be Free of Hawkers by July, Says Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh

Northeast Desk, 15th May: Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that Khyndailad will be cleared of hawkers by mid-July. Addressing reporters on May 14, Lyngdoh revealed that the initiative is on track to be completed by the end of June.

Lyngdoh emphasized that authorities have conducted several meetings to ensure the smooth execution of this plan. “We aim to achieve a hawker-free Khyndailad by mid-July. At least 200 hawkers will be rehabilitated,” he said. The minister added that the registration process for vendors is progressing well in cooperation with various vendor organizations. Spaces for their rehabilitation have been identified and designated.

In addition to addressing the hawker situation, Lyngdoh highlighted the urgent need to curb the influx of drugs and narcotics into Meghalaya. He pointed out the necessity for heightened policing at the state’s entry points, particularly in East Jaintia Hills district. “Seventy percent of narcotics entering Meghalaya come through East Jaintia Hills. Therefore, policing in that district needs to be intensified,” Lyngdoh stated.

The minister has raised this concern with the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of home affairs, stressing the importance of strengthening security to tackle the drug menace effectively.
