Former Assam Minister Thaneswar Boro Passes Away

Guwahati, 17th May: Thaneswar Boro, former President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and former Assam Cabinet Minister, passed away on May 17 at 7:05 am at the age of 86. The former education and revenue minister succumbed to a severe heart condition at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he had been admitted.

Boro’s health had been declining, leading to his hospitalization in Rangia on May 9. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Swasti Hospital and later to GMCH.

The former minister’s body will be transported from Guwahati to Rangia, where numerous parties and organizations are expected to pay their respects.

Thaneswar Boro, a notable figure in Assam’s political landscape, founded the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in 2016. Despite facing significant health challenges, he remained a respected leader. Last year, in recognition of his service, the Assam administration pledged to cover his medical expenses during a previous hospitalization. In July 2023, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dispatched Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah to assess Boro’s health condition and provide updates.

Boro’s passing marks the end of an era for Assam’s political community, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and public service.
