Sikkim: NDRF Rescues Six After Landslide at Pakyong Construction Site
Northeast Desk, 17th May: In a remarkable rescue operation, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) successfully evacuated six individuals trapped by a landslide at an under-construction site for the DC Office in Pakyong on the night of May 16.
The landslide, which struck unexpectedly in the afternoon, buried six workers under the debris, posing a severe threat to their lives. Responding promptly, the NDRF team from Pakyong managed to rescue all six individuals without any casualties reported.
This incident follows a previous landslide last month that blocked a vital road connecting Chungthang to Mangan near Theng Tunnel. This disruption came as North Sikkim was still dealing with the aftermath of a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that occurred on October 3-4, 2023.
The landslide near Theng Tunnel had severely affected transportation, causing significant inconvenience to residents and travelers. The road had remained closed for an extended period due to the GLOF, with its reopening achieved only through considerable restoration efforts.
