Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang District Unveils 10 New Moth Species through Community-Led Conservation
Northeast Desk, 17th May: The Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh has captured attention with the revelation of 10 previously undiscovered moth species, marking a significant milestone in biodiversity conservation efforts.
This groundbreaking discovery is attributed to the dedicated conservation initiatives undertaken by the Titli Trust-Royal Enfield project for Responsible Tourism over the course of two years. Led by the Gobuk villagers in the Upper Siang district, these efforts signify a shift away from hunting practices towards the preservation of the region’s diverse ecosystem.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu lauded the community’s commitment to biodiversity preservation, highlighting the positive outcomes that have emerged from their decision to prioritize conservation over exploitation. The Titli Trust-Royal Enfield project has played a pivotal role in championing sustainable practices and fostering a culture of responsible tourism in the Himalayan region.
Bidisha Dey, Executive Director of the Eicher Group Foundation, emphasized the significance of community-driven conservation endeavors in safeguarding the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. She underscored the importance of collaborative initiatives like the Siang Biodiversity Meet, which serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and collective action towards conservation goals.
Scheduled from May 12th to 18th, the Siang Biodiversity Meet seeks to celebrate the region’s rich biodiversity while promoting responsible tourism practices. This event, organized in partnership with local community-based organizations, conservation groups, and governmental agencies, aims to engage participants through guided nature trails, educational sessions, and community outreach activities.
Supported by key stakeholders including The Mouling National Park, the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department, and Royal Enfield, the Siang Biodiversity Meet exemplifies a concerted effort to foster sustainable development in the Himalayan region. Royal Enfield’s commitment to community resilience aligns with its broader social mission, striving to empower Himalayan communities amidst the challenges posed by climate change.
