Meghalaya: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to Study Uttar Pradesh’s Medical College Model
Northeast Desk, 18th May: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh will visit Uttar Pradesh to examine a model involving six medical colleges, developed with the assistance of the Centre. This initiative follows a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on May 17, which focused on the institutionalization of medical colleges in Meghalaya.
Lyngdoh revealed that Shillong Medical College is expected to commence operations in September 2025, while Tura Medical College is projected to open by 2026-2027. “We are still working on the infrastructure, which is very important,” she said, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to prepare Tura Medical College for its operational timeline.
During her visit to Uttar Pradesh, Lyngdoh aims to gather feedback on the model employed for the six medical colleges. Additionally, she mentioned that the Centre is incorporating a model for both teaching and non-teaching doctors to enhance medical education and training.
The Health Minister also addressed the delays in the affiliation process with North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The government is preparing for an impending inspection by the National Medical Council and is working towards securing affiliation from Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
Lyngdoh acknowledged the challenges faced by Tura Medical College due to its remote location and stated that the government is actively working to improve connectivity to facilitate the college’s operations.
