Dengue Claims Seven Lives in Mizoram Over Two Years

Northeast Desk, 18th May: According to the State Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (SVBDCP), dengue has tragically claimed the lives of seven individuals in Mizoram over the past two years. Officials reported that all seven victims hailed from Aizawl district.

The first dengue case in Mizoram was recorded in 2013, with the first reported death occurring in 2022. In 2022 alone, five fatalities were attributed to the mosquito-borne disease, with two additional deaths recorded last year.

Since 2013, the state has reported over 5,100 cases of dengue. Between January 1 and April 30 of this year, 132 new cases were reported. The highest number of cases was recorded in 2023, with 2,060 infections out of 12,949 samples tested. In 2022, 1,868 cases were detected from 5,252 samples.

Dengue, a viral illness primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, and to a lesser extent by Aedes albopictus, has no specific treatment according to the World Health Organization (WHO). However, early detection and access to proper medical care significantly reduce fatality rates.

The SVBDCP remains vigilant in monitoring and managing the spread of dengue, urging the public to take preventive measures against mosquito bites and eliminate breeding sites to curb the disease’s transmission.
