Supreme Court Recommends Permanent Appointments for Gauhati High Court Judges

Guwahati, 18th May: The Supreme Court on Friday recommended that Justices Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria of the Gauhati High Court be appointed as permanent judges.

This recommendation follows the High Court Collegium’s proposal on April 1, which suggested their permanent appointments. The Chief Ministers and Governors of Assam, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh later concurred with this recommendation.

In accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the Gauhati High Court’s operations were consulted to evaluate the suitability of Justices Khaund and Thakuria.

A two-judge committee reviewed their judgments and found them to be well-reasoned, with thorough fact analysis and appropriate case law references.

After examining the records, the opinions of the consultee judges, and the committee’s evaluation, the Collegium determined that Justices Khaund and Thakuria are fit and suitable for permanent appointments to the Gauhati High Court.
