Northeast Desk, 20th May: Jitendra Chaudhury, the state committee secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] in Tripura, asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would struggle to win if elections were conducted freely and fairly. Speaking to the media, Chaudhury, who also serves as the leader of the opposition, declared the CPIM’s commitment to contest the upcoming Three-Tier Panchayat election.
Chaudhury emphasized the new state election commissioner’s experience and integrity, expressing confidence in the commission’s preparations for the election. “As a responsible political party, and for the sake of democracy, participating in Panchayat and other elections with full force is our responsibility,” he stated.
He criticized the BJP for allegedly manipulating previous elections, noting that the BJP won uncontested in 96 percent of the seats during the last Panchayat election. Chaudhury highlighted recent attacks on CPIM and Congress workers, which he attributed to the BJP’s diminishing support base. He argued that the ruling party’s tactics reflected their fear of losing in a fair contest.
Chaudhury accused the BJP of fostering an environment of fear and disrupting the democratic process since they came to power. He also claimed that the education system has deteriorated under BJP rule, endangering students’ futures.
“The government must investigate and address these issues seriously,” he added, urging for transparent and fair election practices in the state.
