Assam: Police Crack Down on Child Marriage in Karimganj, Arrest Groom and Imam
Guwahati, 22nd May: In a decisive action against child marriage, Karimganj police intervened during a wedding ceremony at Kabariband village under Patharkandi police station, arresting the groom, Bilal Uddin, and his father, Zahraul Islam. The prompt response by law enforcement also led to the rescue of a minor girl, who was dressed as a bride, from the venue.
The incident has stirred significant tension in the area. Despite government directives against child marriage, the families of Bilal Uddin and the minor girl decided to proceed with the wedding, which was held at night. The ceremony had advanced to the Qubool Qubool ritual when the police stepped in, arresting not only the groom but also several attendees, including the officiating priest.
Those arrested include Bilal Uddin, Shabbir Uddin, Diliyar Hussain, Asab Uddin, Nizam Uddin, Saad Uddin, Ali Hussain, and Matabur Rahman. Following their arrest, the court has ordered these individuals to be detained in jail for their involvement in facilitating the child marriage.
The minor girl is now under the care of the Child Welfare Association, ensuring her protection and support in the aftermath of the incident.
This operation highlights the persistent issue of child marriage and demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to enforcing laws designed to protect minors.
