Assam DGP Raises Alarm Over Attack on Police Team
Guwahati, 25th May: Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, has issued a warning on microblogging site X following a targeted attack on a South Salmara Police team by a violent mob on the night of May 23, 2024. The incident unfolded near the Assam-Meghalaya border in the Khalsamari Area and resulted in injuries to a police officer.
In the early hours of the morning, a joint operation led by the South Salmara Police Station (PS) and the Rajabala PS team from Meghalaya was launched to address disturbances caused by a group of individuals who had unlawfully seized eight buffaloes. However, tensions escalated rapidly as the mob became increasingly hostile, culminating in an attack on the police team.
Amidst the confrontation, one police officer sustained injuries. The perpetrators, identified as Aizul Haque Mondol, Soyed Ali, and Akhirul Islam, were subsequently apprehended in connection with the assault.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel while addressing acts of public disorder and criminality. The Assam Police, in collaboration with their counterparts in Meghalaya, remain committed to upholding law and order in the region and ensuring the safety of citizens.
