Tripura to Establish First Deep Borewell Rescue Training Centre

Northeast Desk, 27th May: The Tripura Disaster Management Authority is set to establish the state’s first Deep Borewell Rescue Training Centre, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing rescue capabilities for animals and humans trapped in borewells. This center will be the first of its kind in Tripura, reflecting a significant step forward in disaster management preparedness.

Dr. Sarat Kumar Das, State Project Officer of the Disaster Management and Revenue Department about this development. He noted that Tripura already has a Disaster Management Training Centre at Gokulnagar in Sepahijala District, which serves as a Central Training Institute. However, the increasing frequency of rescue calls for incidents involving animals or humans trapped in holes has necessitated the establishment of a specialized Deep Borewell Rescue Centre.

“Every alternate day, we receive calls to rescue animals or humans trapped in holes. Such incidents are on the rise. We already have a Disaster Management Training Centre at Gokulnagar, but we are now planning to open a Deep Borewell Rescue Centre as per the Government of India’s guidelines. This is the first time such an initiative is being undertaken in the state,” said Dr. Das.

A state-level meeting was convened to discuss this initiative, and officials recently inspected the 9th Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) camp in the South District, evaluating it as a potential site for the training centre. Two master trainers, who have completed national-level training in Deep Borewell Rescue, participated in the site inspection. The infrastructure at the 9th Battalion was deemed suitable, and a report will be submitted to the government for approval.

“If approved, we will commence training this year,” Dr. Das confirmed. The Disaster Management department plans to conduct the training in three phases. Initially, TSR personnel will be trained, followed by local youths from frequently affected areas, and finally, volunteers and officials from Fire Services, Apada Mitra, and the National Cadet Corps.

This initiative underscores Tripura’s commitment to improving its disaster response mechanisms, ensuring better preparedness and safety for its residents.
