Tripura Sees Record Rainfall After 67 Years Due to Cyclone Remal

Northeast Desk, 28th May: In an unprecedented weather event, Tripura experienced massive rainfall in the last 24 hours, recording over 200 mm, a level not seen in 67 years. According to the Disaster Management Authority, Cyclone Remal brought this deluge, surpassing all previous records since 1957.

“After 67 years, Tripura has recorded the highest rainfall in a 24-hour period, exceeding 200 mm. Cyclone Remal crossed Tripura with a speed of around 165 kmph late Monday night, prompting us to issue an orange alert,” an official reported.

The heavy rains led to widespread damage, with many trees uprooted and electric poles destroyed. While the cyclone has moved past Tripura, officials caution that scattered rainfall will continue across the state.

Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Agartala revealed that from 8:30 am on May 27 to 8:30 am on May 28, Unakoti received the highest rainfall at 252.4 mm, followed by Dhalai district with 248.3 mm, North District with 242 mm, West District with 229 mm, Khowai district with 199 mm, Gomati district with 198.2 mm, Sipahijala district with 187.2 mm, and South District with 168 mm.

Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage and urging residents to stay cautious and prepared for ongoing adverse weather conditions.
