Mizoram: Cyclone Remal Triggers Massive Landslides in State; Many Feared Trapped
Northeast Desk, 28th May: In the wake of Cyclone Remal’s destructive path, a massive landslide struck the ITI and Salem localities border in Mizoram on May 28, raising fears that many individuals are trapped under the rubble. The devastating landslide was triggered by the severe weather conditions as Cyclone Remal made landfall across the state.
Search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate and retrieve people and bodies trapped beneath the debris. At Salem locality, a tragic incident saw a family of three buried under the landslide. Authorities have launched an intensive search operation to locate the couple and their daughter.
This is a developing story, and further details are awaited as rescue teams continue their efforts. In Sairang, the Tlawng River is rising alarmingly at a rate of 2 feet every 10 minutes due to the ongoing heavy rains, exacerbating the flooding situation in the area.
Earlier in the day, a similar incident occurred when a stone quarry collapsed at the Melthum and Hlimen border in Aizawl around 6 am, resulting in the death of 14 workers. Many more are feared dead, and authorities have mounted a large-scale search to find the trapped workers.
The cyclone has also caused significant disruptions, including a massive landslide that blocked Lengpui Airport. Additionally, several community cemeteries collapsed, affecting over 20 graveyards. In Tlangnuam locality, the intense water flow led to pigs being swept away, illustrating the cyclone’s severe impact on both human and animal life.
Cyclone Remal began making landfall along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on the night of May 26, bringing heavy rains and powerful gusts. It later proceeded towards the northeastern parts of India, including Mizoram, where it has caused widespread destruction and ongoing emergency response efforts.
