Northeastern India Braces for Heavy Rainfall, Potential Flooding, and Landslides
Northeast Desk, 28th May: The northeastern region of India is on high alert as it prepares for heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls predicted in isolated areas across several states. Recent weather forecasts have highlighted Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim as areas at risk, raising concerns of flooding and landslides.
Widespread rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, is anticipated over these regions, underscoring the potential threats to infrastructure and habitats. The forecasted weather conditions necessitate heightened vigilance and preparedness to mitigate risks and ensure public safety.
In addition to the northeastern region, scattered rain with thunderstorms is expected to impact Gangetic West Bengal and Coastal Karnataka. Isolated rain with thunderstorms may also affect Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Interior Karnataka.
While the northeast braces for heavy rainfall, other parts of the country face soaring temperatures. Maximum temperatures are expected to soar above 45°C in some places of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Additionally, temperatures above 40°C are forecasted in several regions, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.
The onset of heat wave conditions, particularly in West Rajasthan, poses significant challenges for residents and authorities. Many parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, as well as East Rajasthan, are expected to experience severe heat wave conditions. Precautionary measures and public awareness campaigns are crucial to safeguarding lives and mitigating the impact of extreme weather events.
