Assam CM Assures Control Over Cyclone Remal Damage, Expresses Willingness to Seek Help if Needed

Guwahati, 29th May: In the wake of Cyclone Remal’s impact on Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the situation, emphasizing that the damage remains under control but expressing openness to seeking assistance from Odisha if required.

Responding to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s concern over Assam’s condition, CM Sarma assured reporters that while the situation is manageable, he would not hesitate to request help from Odisha if the circumstances escalate. “The situation is in limit. If something huge happens, I will call the Odisha CM and ask for help. There is no prestige issue,” Sarma stated.

Reflecting on past interactions, Sarma noted his attempts to offer assistance to Odisha following recent train accidents. “I wrote to CM Patnaik’s office because I could not speak to him. My chief secretary had also spoken with them. I assured them of every kind of assistance from Assam government in such a tragic time,” he added.

Highlighting the cultural and linguistic ties between Assam and Odisha, as well as neighboring states like Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar, Sarma emphasized the shared heritage and mutual support. “We are eastern Indians and we share a lot in common. The languages of Odisha and Assam are almost 60 percent the same. Hence, when Odisha needs us, Assam will be there. And when Assam needs them, I hope they will be there too,” he said.

Earlier, CM Patnaik had expressed his concern via the microblogging site X, acknowledging the situation in Assam and offering support. “Concerned to know about the situation in Assam affected by Cyclone Remal. Deeply anguished over the loss of life and damage to the property. Odisha stands with Assam in this hour of need and offers all possible assistance to bring back normalcy,” Patnaik posted.

CM Sarma’s remarks came during an election rally at Mayurbhanj, Odisha, on May 28, reiterating his commitment to regional cooperation and support amid natural calamities.
