Death Toll Rises to 28 as Cyclone Remal Triggers Catastrophic Landslides in Mizoram
Northeast Desk, 29th May: The death toll from the devastating landslides and torrential rains caused by Cyclone Remal has risen to 28, according to the latest reports. Search operations have resumed in the affected areas as authorities continue to recover bodies still buried under debris.
Cyclone Remal’s landfall in Northeast India brought severe weather conditions, leading to widespread chaos and significant loss of life. The Melthum quarry collapse alone accounted for 14 fatalities, with an additional 14 deaths reported from surrounding areas experiencing massive landslides.
Among the hardest-hit areas was the Salem locality, where a landslide claimed the lives of a family of three. Other fatalities were reported from Falkawn, Kanan, Kulikawn, and ITI localities, which were also severely affected by landslides.
In response to the disaster, rescue operations were quickly initiated by the state disaster response team, paramilitary forces, members of the Young Mizo Association, and local volunteers. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, along with the Home Minister, Sports Minister, MLAs, DC, SP, and officials from the Central Young Mizo Association, have been actively involved in assessing the situation and coordinating rescue efforts at various sites.
The Young Mizo Association has issued a call for community cleanup efforts at the affected cemeteries, emphasizing the need for collective action in the aftermath of the disaster.
To provide relief to those affected, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced an ex-gratia of Rs 15 crore for landslide victims in Mizoram. Additionally, a compensation of Rs 4 lakhs will be provided to the next of kin of those who lost their lives, offering some support during these difficult times. The government’s swift response aims to alleviate the suffering of the residents and aid in the recovery process following the catastrophic events triggered by Cyclone Remal.
