Cyclone Remal Wreaks Havoc on Meghalaya’s Power Infrastructure

Northeast Desk, 29th May: Meghalaya Power Minister A T Mondal has reported significant damage to power lines across the state due to the devastation caused by Cyclone Remal on May 28. In a statement to the press, Mondal detailed the extensive destruction, particularly in the Garo Hills region, following the heavy rains that accompanied the cyclone.

“A substantial number of power lines have been destroyed, especially in Garo Hills, due to widespread rains,” said Mondal. He assured that the restoration process is in full swing, with the government deploying an additional 80 workers to expedite repairs. “The damage in Garo Hills is extensive. We have engaged 80 more people to restore the lines and are doing our best to complete the work as soon as possible,” he added.

Mondal also noted that while power lines in East Garo Hills have been partially restored, some localized issues remain unresolved. “Our focus is on restoring major transmission lines,” he stated.

Despite the severe impact on the power infrastructure, Mondal ruled out the possibility of load shedding, citing the state’s current power situation as stable. “There is no reason for load shedding at the moment. In fact, the recent rainfall has been somewhat beneficial,” he assured.

Mondal’s comments come as Meghalaya continues to deal with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, with efforts ongoing to repair and stabilize the power grid to ensure uninterrupted supply to residents.
