Meghalaya Assembly Panel Proposes Innovative Plan to Preserve State Cement Factory

Northeast Desk, 30th May: In an effort to preserve the legacy and infrastructure of Meghalaya’s only government-owned cement factory, the state Assembly’s Committee on Government Assurances has proposed a novel solution. During a spot inspection of Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) on May 29, the committee, led by Chairman Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, explored alternatives to the government’s plan to shut down the struggling facility.

Accompanied by committee members Gabriel Wahlang and Matthew B Kurbah, the panel met with MCCL officials, including the Managing Director and Chief General Manager, to assess the factory’s condition. The committee unanimously recommended repurposing the factory premises into a museum and converting the staff quarters into a resort.

The committee recognized the significant challenges facing MCCL, such as high operational costs and limited prospects for revival, which have prompted the government to consider closing the facility. However, they saw potential in transforming the site into a unique tourist attraction. This approach could generate revenue and preserve the factory’s historical significance.

The committee’s proposal includes creating a museum to showcase the factory’s rich industrial heritage and converting the staff quarters into a serene resort. This plan aims to attract tourists, offering them a chance to explore the historical site and enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

The committee suggested involving MCCL’s workforce in managing the proposed museum and resort. This strategy would provide the employees with an opportunity to transition into the hospitality and tourism sector, mitigating job losses and ensuring a smoother transition.

While expressing regret over the potential closure of MCCL, committee members remained optimistic that the government would develop a comprehensive package and favorable exit plan for the staff. This plan would address their concerns and ensure their well-being during the transition period.

The innovative proposal aims to balance the preservation of Meghalaya’s industrial heritage with economic viability, offering a sustainable solution for the future of the MCCL site.
