Heavy Rain Triggers Fatal Floods in Manipur’s Imphal Valley
Northeast Desk, 30th May: Severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Manipur’s Imphal valley has resulted in three fatalities and affected thousands of residents, officials reported on Thursday.
The devastating effects of the floods were felt across the region, with tragic incidents claiming lives and displacing numerous families. A 34-year-old man lost his life, and three others sustained injuries in a landslide triggered by heavy rain at Thonglang road in Senapati district on Wednesday. Additionally, an 83-year-old woman drowned in the overflowing Senapati river, while a 75-year-old man succumbed to electrocution after coming in contact with an electric pole during rain in Imphal.
The situation exacerbated as floodwaters from the overflowing Imphal River inundated several areas, prompting residents to seek refuge in nearby community halls. In Imphal West district alone, flooding was reported in at least 86 areas, including Khuman Lampak, Nagaram, Sagolband, Uripok, Keisamthong, and Paona.
Furthermore, incessant rainfall led to the breach of the Imphal River bank near Keirang, Khabam, and Lairiyengbam Leikai areas in Imphal East district, inundating hundreds of houses and causing widespread devastation. Particularly hard-hit were areas in Heingang and Khurai assembly constituencies, where floodwaters reached chest level in many parts.
Responding to the crisis, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived in Imphal via a special Air Force flight around 10 pm on Wednesday to lead rescue operations. The deployment of emergency responders underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for assistance in mitigating the impact of the floods on affected communities.
As the region grapples with the aftermath of the deluge, authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to those affected, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents amidst the ongoing crisis.
