Severe Flooding Threatens Assam and Manipur: Over Two Lakh Affected

Guwahati, 31st May: Six rivers in Assam and Manipur, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are experiencing severe flooding, placing numerous districts in the region at significant risk, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC).

In Assam’s Jorhat district, the Brahmaputra River at Neamatighat is flowing at 85.25 metres, exceeding its danger level of 85.54 metres. The Barak River is also in a critical state. In Manipur’s Imphal East district, the Barak River at Chotabekra is at 30.15 metres, 3.95 metres above its danger level, posing a severe threat to nearby communities.

The Barak River continues to affect several districts in Assam. At Badarpur Ghat in Karimganj district, it is at 18.13 metres, 1.28 metres above the danger level. At Annapurna Ghat in Cachar district, it measures 21.52 metres, 1.69 metres above the danger mark. At Fulertal in Cachar district, the water level is 25.94 metres, 2.06 metres above the danger level and showing a steady trend. In the same district, at Dholai, the river stands at 24.9 metres, 0.32 metres above the danger level, though it is now falling.

The Kopili River at Kampur in Nagaon district is also in a severe situation, flowing at 62.08 metres, 1.58 metres above its danger mark of 60.5 metres. The Kushiyara River in Karimganj district is at 16.5 metres, 1.56 metres above its danger level, requiring immediate action to mitigate potential flood damage.

Additionally, the Katakhal River at Matijuri is flowing at 22.23 metres, 1.96 metres above its danger level, while the Dhaleswari River at Gharmura is at 28.18 metres, 0.13 metres above its danger level. Although the levels of these rivers are currently falling, they remain in a severe state, necessitating continued vigilance.

Over two lakh people have been affected by the flooding in nine districts of Assam following incessant rainfall in the wake of Cyclone Remal, officials report. Since May 28, six people have died due to the flood, rain, and storms in the state.

Efforts are underway to manage and mitigate the impact of these floods, with local authorities and disaster management teams working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure the safety of affected communities.
