Assam Floods: Situation Remains Grim with Three More Fatalities and New Areas Inundated

Guwahati, 3rd June: The flood situation in Assam continues to be dire, with three more fatalities reported and new areas becoming inundated, according to an official bulletin released on Sunday. However, the number of affected people has seen a marginal decrease.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin reported that 5,35,246 people in 13 districts remain affected by the floods. This is a slight decrease from the 6,01,642 people affected in 10 districts on Saturday. The recent fatalities, two in Cachar and one in Nagaon, have increased the death toll from floods and storms to 18 since May 28.

Rivers such as the Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara continue to flow above the danger level, exacerbating the flooding. The worst-hit district is Nagaon, where 3,03,567 people are affected, followed by Cachar with 1,09,798 affected individuals and Hojai with 86,382.

Over 39,000 displaced people are currently taking shelter in 193 relief camps across various districts, with an additional 82 relief distribution centres in operation. Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administration, and medical teams, are actively involved in rescue and relief operations.

Significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and other properties, has been reported from different districts, further complicating the situation and relief efforts.
