Assam: Section 144 Imposed in Kokrajhar and Tinsukia Districts Ahead of Vote Counting Day
Guwahati, 3rd June: In anticipation of the upcoming vote counting day, the Kokrajhar district administration has implemented Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) within a 100-meter radius of the strong room at Basic Training Center Kokrajhar. This preventive measure aims to uphold law and order during the crucial phase of the electoral process.
Under Section 144, the opening of shops or commercial establishments in the designated area is prohibited to mitigate potential disturbances. Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi, IAS, District Magistrate of Kokrajhar, has invoked his authority under Section 144 of the CrPC, mandating the closure of all shops and commercial establishments within 100 meters of the Counting Centre at Basic Training Centre, Kokrajhar. The order, effective immediately, will persist until the results of the Lok Sabha Election 2024 are officially announced.
Issued ex-parte, the order is aimed at ensuring peace and order in the district and facilitating the smooth conduct of the vote counting process, scheduled for June 4, 2024.
Similarly, in Tinsukia district, District Magistrate Swapneel Paul has enacted prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC to maintain tranquility and prevent disturbances by anti-social elements during the counting period. These measures include a ban on processions and sloganeering within the counting center premises, prohibition of PA systems and loudspeakers, restrictions on carrying weapons like sticks, lathis, and firearms, and limitations on gatherings exceeding five persons within a 1 km radius of the counting center until the completion of vote counting and result declaration.
