Nagaland Congress MP S Supongmeren Jamir Expresses Gratitude Following Historic Victory
Northeast Desk, 5th June: Nagaland Congress MP S Supongmeren Jamir expressed heartfelt gratitude in a letter, thanking the Lord Almighty for His kindness and for demonstrating that all things are possible through Him.
Jamir accepted the verdict of the people of Nagaland with gratitude and humility, pledging to work tirelessly to honor the mandate given to him and the Congress Party. He extended sincere thanks to his supporters, well-wishers, the Congress Family, the Campaign Committee, and volunteers for their unwavering support and sacrifices.
He also acknowledged the camaraderie and partnership of the Rising People’s Party, and expressed his appreciation to Civil Society and Church Organisations, the Media Fraternity, and poll-related government officials for their roles in facilitating the democratic process.
Expressing admiration for his fellow candidates’ spirited campaigns, Jamir looked forward to their constructive contributions. He reaffirmed his commitment to representing the interests and aspirations of the people of Nagaland and the nation to the best of his abilities, both within and outside Parliament.
On June 4, 2024, Congress made history by winning the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland after a 20-year gap, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The party does not currently have any MLA in the state assembly.
Jamir defeated his nearest rival, Chumben Murry of the NDPP, a BJP ally, by a margin of 50,984 votes, as reported by Sushil Kumar Patel, the returning officer for the Lok Sabha polls. Jamir secured 401,951 votes, while Murry received 350,967 votes and Independent candidate Hayithung Tungoe Lotha garnered 6,232 votes.
This victory marks the first major win for the Congress in Nagaland since 2014, with the party last winning the Lok Sabha seat in 1999. In the 2019 election, NDPP candidate Tohekho Yeptomi had won the seat by over 13,000 votes against Congress candidate K L Chishi.
