Assam Lok Sabha Elections 2024: BJP and Congress Gain Vote Share; AIUDF Suffers Significant Loss

Guwahati, 5th June: In the latest Lok Sabha elections in Assam, both the BJP and Congress have seen an increase in their vote shares, according to statistics from the Election Commission (EC). The BJP, which won nine of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, saw its vote share rise by 1.02 per cent, moving from 36.41 per cent in 2019 to 37.43 per cent in 2024. Similarly, Congress, which secured three seats, experienced a 1.69 per cent increase in vote share, climbing from 35.79 per cent to 37.48 per cent.

Despite these gains for the major parties, the overall vote share for the NDA, which won 11 seats in Assam, saw a slight decrease of 0.45 per cent. This dip is partly attributed to the decline in vote share for the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an NDA ally. The AGP’s vote share dropped to 6.46 per cent in 2024 from 8.31 per cent in 2019, although it managed to win a Lok Sabha seat after a decade.

The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), another NDA constituent, made its debut in the Lok Sabha by winning the Kokrajhar seat with a vote share of 2.43 per cent across the state.

In contrast, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) faced a substantial setback. Its president, Badruddin Ajmal, lost the Dhubri seat, which he had held for three consecutive terms, by a significant margin of over 10 lakh votes. The AIUDF’s vote share plummeted to 3.13 per cent from 7.87 per cent. The party contested three seats—Dhubri, Nagaon, and Karimganj—finishing second in one and third in the other two.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contested the Dibrugarh and Sonitpur constituencies, finishing third in both and achieving a vote share of 0.85 per cent. The Trinamool Congress contested three seats, securing a vote share of 0.37 per cent, while the Left parties (CPI and CPI(M)), each contesting one seat, garnered a combined vote share of 0.58 per cent.

Independent candidates collectively accounted for a vote share of 6.22 per cent, and the None of the Above (NOTA) option was selected by 1.19 per cent of voters.

The elections for Assam’s 14 parliamentary seats were conducted in three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7, with a notable voter turnout of 81.56 per cent from the total 2.45 crore electorate.
