VPP in Meghalaya Distances Itself from BJP-Led NDA, Reaffirms Commitment to Secularism and Minority Rights
Northeast Desk, 6th June: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) in Meghalaya has distanced itself from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the national level, citing ideological differences and a firm commitment to secularism and minority rights.
VPP leader Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit emphasized the party’s dedication to avoiding alliances with political entities that hold different beliefs and principles. He reiterated VPP’s commitment to secularism and respect for all religions, expressing readiness to support the INDIA coalition to protect minority rights.
While the VPP does not currently plan to formally join the INDIA movement, Basaiawmoit indicated openness to offering support when necessary.
This stance follows VPP’s impressive performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where VPP candidate Ricky AJ Syngkon won the Shillong seat, defeating sitting MP and Congress leader Vincent Pala by a margin of 3.7 lakh votes. Meanwhile, the Tura Lok Sabha seat was secured by Congress candidate Saleng A Sangma.
