Meghalaya Power Minister Assures No Load Shedding Amid Cyclone-Induced Repairs

Northeast Desk, 7th June: Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondal has assured residents that there will be no load shedding in the state, despite recent concerns over power cuts due to Cyclone Remal. Speaking on June 6, Mondal emphasized that the state’s power situation remains comfortable.

Acknowledging the disruption caused by the cyclone, Mondal explained that the storm had significantly damaged power distribution and transmission infrastructure, leading to widespread outages. He defended the necessary shutdowns, stating they were crucial for facilitating repairs to the damaged power lines.

“Some areas have faulty connections, and to repair those, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is forced to implement shutdowns,” Mondal explained. He highlighted that MeECL workers were using the power cuts to erect new poles, repair transmission lines, and strengthen substations. The corporation is currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the cyclone.

Despite these challenges, Mondal reiterated that Meghalaya remains in a comfortable position regarding power availability. He assured that the government does not plan to resort to load shedding at this time.
