Gaurav Gogoi Condemns Assam CM’s Allegations, Calls for Unity in Northeast
Guwahati, June 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent remarks alleging interference by leaders of a specific religion in the NDA’s losses in Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Manipur have sparked controversy, drawing condemnation from Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. Gogoi criticized Sarma’s statement as “irresponsible and reckless,” highlighting the need for maturity in accepting electoral outcomes.
Taking to Twitter, Gogoi urged the respective Chief Ministers of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Manipur to publicly denounce Sarma’s remarks, emphasizing the importance of preserving the unique identity of the Northeast. He stressed the need for unity in safeguarding the region’s diversity and harmony.
The controversy arose from Sarma’s assertions on June 4, where he attributed the NDA’s defeat in the mentioned states to alleged interference by leaders of a specific religion. Sarma’s comments implied that these religious figures actively worked against the ruling alliance, influencing election outcomes.
Despite facing backlash, Sarma stood by his remarks, reiterating his observations on Twitter and highlighting the distinction between political opponents and religious figures. However, the controversy has underscored the delicate balance between political discourse and communal harmony in the region.
Amidst the ongoing debate, Sarma celebrated the BJP-led alliance’s success in Assam, where they secured victories in 11 out of 14 seats. The fallout from Sarma’s remarks highlights the need for responsible leadership and inclusive dialogue to address sensitive issues in the Northeastern states.
